Alexandre Family Farm
Co+opportunity is thrilled to now carry Alexandre Family Farm milks, yogurts, and eggs at both of our locations! Alexandre Family Farm is truly a family operation: Blake and Stephanie Alexandre and their children have poured five combined generations of know-how into their regenerative organic farms in Northern California where the redwoods meet the sea. Alexandre Family Farm is comprised of four grass-based organic dairies with crossbred milk cows on irrigated pastures in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, while they grow a majority of their own hay on organic cropland in Modoc County. The Alexandre Family are strong proponents of holistic organic farm practices, nutritional education and environmental stewardship - and they produce outstanding dairy and eggs!
In addition to being United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), Alexandre Family Farm and Alexandre Kids Eggs are Non-GMO Project Verified, American Humane Certified, and rated 5 Cows/Beyond Organic by the Cornucopia Institute. Translation? Everything produced on their 4,300 acres of farmland is free of chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, synthetic hormones, and antibiotics and the animals (from cows to hens) are raised together on 100% organic coastal pasture, forage, and feed. Nor is this commitment to best practices limited to organic: the Alexandre Family practices holistic (biodynamic) farming, including commitments to regenerative sustainability and ensuring the plant, microbial, and animal biodiversity of the land for generations to come. Around their property are spaces dedicated to conservation easement programs such as the Wetland Reserve Program and the Grassland Reserve Program, as well as over 200 species of birds (including a nesting Bald Eagle), locally managed beehives, and a herd of Roosevelt Elk, among many more!
While the 365 days-a-year of organic coastal pasture make up part of the equation for delicious dairy, there is more that makes the Alexandre family’s milk cows special: their herd is 100% crossbreeds (New Zealand Kiwi Cross, German Fleckvieh, New Zealand Ayrshire, Dutch Holstein, and Danish Hersey) and they ensure that each breeding bull and cow carry only the A2/A2 beta-casein protein gene. A2/A2 beta-casein is the primary protein in human milk; most cows today produce a combination of A2 and A1 proteins (which studies suggest may be more difficult for the human body to digest). Alexandre Family Farm milk is minimally processed, non-homogenized (look for the cream on top!), high in butterfat (Paleo-diet approved!), and sold in BPA-free PET plastic bottles that are shaped to protect the soft cream top.
Alexandre Kids Eggs started as a small 4-H and Future Farmers of America project by two of the younger Alexandres, and has grown into a successful business. The chickens pasture with the cows, meaning the same access to green living grasses 365 days a year and the same opportunities to forage. The chicken coops are moved twice a week to ensure fresh pasture, and each individual egg is nest-laid and hand-gathered.
