Mad Hippie

What company has been featured in Essence, People, Health, Reader’s Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, Allure, Buzzfeed, and Forbes (among others) and has been name dropped by Padma Lakshmi and is dedicated to the preservation of the environment? Mad Hippie.

Co-founded by husband-and-wife Sam and Dana Stewart, this now Portland-based company is built on the notion that natural skin care can be every bit as effective as traditional. Years of surfing and adventure-seeking in Central America had left the pair with sun-damaged skin, and after struggling to find skin care products that both looked and felt good, they began to make their own (with the aid and expertise of dermatologists, naturopaths and pharmacologists). The result? A line of all-natural, cruelty-free, GMO-free, and vegan (except for some beeswax in their SPF) skin care products free of parabens, synthetic fragrance, and other additives.

Mad Hippie’s website states that the brand takes their “responsibility to the planet seriously and that’s why we are always working to further reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact. From recently switching to some of the only BPA-free, fully recyclable airless pumps on the market, to printing solely with soy inks and running our entire facility off alternative energy, Mad Hippie is dedicated to the preservation of the environment.” They also donate $1 of every web sale to conservation efforts around the world; the non-profit currently featured on their website is Save the Elephants, which works to identify and support partners to stop poaching, thwart traffickers, and end the global demand for ivory.

Popular products include Mad Hippie’s much-lauded Vitamin C Serum, formulated to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and brighten skin, Hydrating Nutrient Mist (which includes hyaluronic acid in an application-friendly atomized form), and Facial SPF which promises to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays with zinc oxide - long a favorite of surfers!
